Swee Choon Dim Sum, Jalan Besar: A Midnight Feast

If you're in the mood for some delicious dim sum and fancy a late-night food adventure, Swee Choon in Jalan Besar is a place try. We arrived around 1:00 AM craving something savoury and satisfying. The novelty of going out so late adding to the evening.

Here’s a breakdown of what we tried and what made our visit so enjoyable.

Spicy Prawn Dumplings: A Flavour Explosion

Such fresh flavours on the Spicy Prawn Dumplings

The first dish that arrived was the spicy prawn dumplings, which came highly recommended. The moment I picked one up, I could already smell the heat from the chili, which was a good sign for spice lovers. The dumplings had a perfect balance of heat and flavour; the chili wasn’t just fiery but also packed with depth. The texture of the prawn filling was fantastic, with a delicious blend of spices that lingered on the lips.

These dumplings had a nice kick, but the spice didn’t overpower the flavors inside. If you’re someone who loves a bit of heat in your food, these are definitely worth trying. But be warned, they’re not for the faint of heart — the heat lingers, and my lips were still tingling long after finishing!

Xiao long Bao: Steamed Perfection

Soupy XIao Long Bao

Next up, we tried the Xiao long bao, which are steamed buns filled with minced pork and soup. These buns are a must-try and out my families favourite. When you bite into them, you can feel the broth spill out — rich, flavorful, and comforting. It was the perfect balance of savory and juicy.

What I love most about these is how the dough isn’t too thick, allowing the meat and broth to shine. The generous amount of pork inside was a treat, and the texture was spot-on. Even the top of the bun, where it’s all gathered into a little knot, wasn’t too thick, so you don’t get an overwhelming bite of dough. These were one of the best Xiao long bao I’ve had in Singapore.

Bean Curd Prawns: A Mixed Bag

Curious bean curd prawns

We also ordered bean curd prawns, a dish I was curious about but not sure what to expect. The bean curd was coated in a sticky sauce that had a slight sweetness to it. The prawns inside were tender, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the bean curd itself — it didn’t have much flavour, and the texture was a bit soft for my liking.

The sauce was a bit underwhelming, and I found myself wishing it had a little more punch. I think with a bit more chili sauce, this dish would improve dramatically. But as it stands, it wasn’t my favourite. If you’re into experimenting with different textures, it might be worth a try, but it’s definitely not something I would order again unless it came with more spice and flavour.

Salted Egg Buns: The Grand Finale

Perfection in a bun - salted egg custard bao

To round off the night, we ordered their the salted egg buns, which were the highlight of the meal for me. These buns were so cute and had the perfect weight to them. When you bit into them, the salted egg custard oozed out just right — creamy, smooth, and not too oily.

The custard had the right balance of salty and sweet, and the dough was just the right thickness.

If you're a fan of salted egg anything, this is a must-try. I could easily eat several of these in one sitting! It was definitely the perfect way to end our meal.

Final Thoughts: A Fun Spot for Late-Night Dim Sum

Swee Choon is definitely a great spot to visit if you're craving dim sum at odd hours of the night. The atmosphere is cozy, with both indoor and outdoor seating options, and it's a fun place to share a meal with friends. The food is fresh, the flavours are bold, and the overall experience was fantastic.

My favourite dishes of the night were the spicy prawn dumplings, the Xiao Long bao, and of course, the salted egg buns. While some dishes, like the bean curd prawns, weren’t my favourite, it was great to try something new. The prices are also quite reasonable, considering the quality and portion sizes.
